3 Quick Tips for
Organizing Your Garage
Choose a
day for the big cleanup in advance, and call the
Salvation Army to schedule a pick-up for late that
day or the next. Gather together large trash bags,
old boxes, work gloves, index cards and tape for
labeling, and a thick dark marker.
Start with big,
bulky items like empty boxes, that ugly chair Aunt Edna gave
you, and the lawn mower that broke down years ago that your
husband keeps saying he'll fix. This will give you an instant
sense of progress, and make room for you to work.
Sort through
everything else one item at a time, donating anything you
haven't used in two years that's still in usable condition,
and tossing the rest. Blessing someone else with the things
you no longer use or need makes it easier to get rid of
them.
3.
Categorize, contain and label
As you sort,
gather things you're keeping into categories such as
automotive supplies, tools and hardware, lawn and garden
items, sports equipment, etc. Then decide where each
will "live" and purchase appropriate containers or
storage. I like to use open or stackable bins on
shelves, plastic drawer units, and organizers you can
buy at Lowes, Home Depot, or Target specifically made
for garage storage. Feel free to call me for
free suggestions to suit your situation. Lastly, label
everything, so everyone knows where to find things and
where to put them back. Good luck, and go to it!
